Our Tubular Steel range includes Square Hollow Sections (SHS) or Square Steel Tubes in primed mild steel or pregal, with various grades, finishes, and materials. Our steel stores carry a comprehensive range of metric square sizes. Square Box Sections or SHS tubes are available in dual grade or 350-grade mild steel. We provide the flexibility to cut stocked SHS to your specifications, allowing you to purchase only the required lengths or cut pieces (cutting charges apply). Our stores stock Square Hollow Sections in manufactured lengths.
SHS Mill Finish is a Square Hollow Steel Tube – Grade C350L0 are manufactured and tested to comply with the requirements of the following of AS/NZS 1163 Cold-formed structural steel hollow sections (Grade C350L0). The Primed finish is applied in-line using a patented process. Tubular steel SHS has a huge range of applications and all sizes are available cut to your sizes (charges Apply).
Characteristics
A steel square tube, cold-formed through Electro-Resistance Welding (ERW), features a smooth exterior finish. The external weld seam is scarfed off for a polished appearance, while the internal seam remains untreated. Various Mild Steel Square Hollow Sections (SHS) grades are available.
Steel SHS is structurally favoured for columns and posts due to its higher strength-to-weight ratio, ease of construction and versatility in attachment. Commonly used in veranda posts, building support columns, gate, and fence posts, SHS is chosen for its smooth exterior, lack of sharp edges, and minimal post-fabrication cleanup.
Common Applications
Our Pregal steel Square Steel tubes are used for a wide variety of applications. We choose our stock to assist you in obtaining the Pregal steel square tube necessary for your project. Common applications for Pregal steel square hollow sections include:
Edcon Steel Tips
Pregal Steel Square Hollow Tubes include a variety of galvanised steel tubes, such as DuraGal®, ALLGAL®, and SupaGal® that meet AS/NZ 4792 standards. These tubes are interchangeable for most applications, but we can accommodate specific properties upon request.
Lengths and sizes vary based on material grade, and careful consideration of design lengths can optimise product yield.
Fencers can benefit from our pre-cut fence posts, available in Australian-made 350 or Dual grade AS/NZS1163 material, ensuring superior strength.
Weld seam considerations are essential for telescoping applications, see the telescoping chart available on our website. Surface protection is crucial, especially for internal surfaces not easily accessible, necessitating hot-dip galvanising for corrosion prevention in harsh environments or marine applications.
Surface Preparation & Coatings
Our SHS product range includes inline tube galvanised steel and primed mild steel SHS, offering distinct advantages.
Inline galvanising provides a smooth finish, reduced weld fumes and avoids the need for pre-weld grinding. However, it offers limited corrosion protection and is suitable for benign to moderate environments.
For harsher conditions, refer to AS/NZS 2312. The ILG100 coating has a minimum average of 100g/m2, with a water-based polymer coating for transport protection.
Primed Mild Steel SHS is painted for internal storage, featuring temporary rust protection, reduced surface preparation and ease of welding, with a 10-20 microns DFT blue coating.
