Sheffield Gauge Plate

Based in the UK, Sheffield Gauge Plate (SGP) is known as one of the leading suppliers of gauge plate (also known as flat ground stock) in the world. While SGP has been trading under the name for around 20 years, gauge plate has been produced on its premises for over 40 years.

SGP’s gauge plate range is the highest quality available. It is manufactured with raw materials from the UK and Europe. Every SGP product is annealed to provide excellent ductility and workability, so further heat treatment is generally unnecessary.

SGPs range of gauge plate is used to make precise tools to work metal, such as machine ways, gauges, punches and dies. It is also a typical choice for cutting tools such as knives and saws, as well as high-temperature tools such as die casting and hot shear blades.

What is gauge plate?

Gauge plate is a precision ground flat bar made from tool steel, typically the 01 tool steel grade.

During the manufacturing of gauge plate, the steel is cut to a specified length and formed into flat strips. The surface is then precision ground to remove all defects and ensure all sides are free of carburisation (a process where steel absorbs carbon while the metal is heated in the presence of a carbon-bearing material, such as charcoal or carbon monoxide).

The precision grinding process ensures that gauge plate products fall within very tight tolerances (thickness and width) and specifications and is commonly used when the final product requires a very precise threshold. As such, gauge plate should be stored and handled carefully to ensure the final finish is not damaged.
