So, let’s meet some of the team at Edcon Steel Blacktown.

Brett, Branch Manager

With the Edcon team for nearly 11 years, Brett is the leader of the team at Blacktown. And with more than 40 years in the steel industry, he knows a thing or two.

“I’m a fitter and turner by trade and spent 20 plus years working for a tool steel engineering supplier before joining Edcon,” Brett explains.

“And what I love about Edcon Steel is that there’s no such thing as a typical day here.

You don’t know whether the next person who walks in will have a simple question or request or will throw something unusual at you that you have to help them find or research.

Every day is different, that’s for sure.”

The varied customers and customer requests are what makes Edcon so special, according to Brett.

Scott, Sales and Customer Service

Scott joined the Edcon Blacktown team around four years ago and brought with him extensive customer service experience and a willingness to go above and beyond for customers.

As a Sales and Customer Service Representative and Assistant Manager for the store, Scott is an integral part of the team, from answering calls and processing orders to helping manage staff and assisting customers.

“I really want every customer to have a great service experience, so if I can’t help them, I’ll make sure I point them in the direction of someone who can,” Scott explains.

“I really love the diverse range of people I get to meet and interact with as part of my job, not just the team but the customers too.

We really care about our customers at Edcon and it’s a great team to be a part of.”

Mark, Sales and Customer Service

Coming up to seven years with Edcon Steel, Mark has an in-depth knowledge of Edcon’s products and services, as well as the steel industry. His experience in fitting and machining (including CNC machining) and years spent working for an aerospace engineering company make him invaluable to the team.

Mark really enjoys building relationships with customers, as he explains: “Whether it’s answering phones or face-to-face customer service, you get to know customers and they tend to gravitate towards certain team members as their first port of call.

Customers like coming to me because we’ve developed a relationship and I’ve helped them out in the past… and they like giving me a hard time for following the Roosters,” he laughs.

The camaraderie between the staff and customers is one of the best things about the job, according to Mark.

Alapatti, Store Person

With more than eight years with Edcon Steel, Alapatti is a vital part of the Blacktown team. As the most experienced store person, he spends a lot of his time assisting the newer recruits and showing them what to do.

And his enthusiasm is contagious. When asked what he loves most about working for Edcon Steel, Alapatti replied:

“Everything!

Serving the customers, I’m happy. Cutting the steel, I’m happy. Unloading the trucks, I’m happy. It’s a really great job.

I really enjoy being active and Edcon Steel is perfect for that. Every day is different and I get to do lots of different things.”

Lee, Store Person

Lee had an interesting start with Edcon Steel, joining the team at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. Since that time, he has become a valued member of our team.

As one of our more experienced storemen, Lee does so much to ensure all of our customers receive their orders quickly and efficiently.

“From preparing orders to loading trucks, cutting steel to driving the forklift, I do a bit of everything in the warehouse,” he explains.

As one of our licensed forklift operators, Lee is an expert hand at driving: “I think operating the forklift is what I’m best at.

But I really enjoy the physicality of the job. And, of course, the people.”

Brian, Truck Driver

Brian has been a truck driver for Edcon Steel for over 12 years, so he knows his way around the traps.

“Every store has its own drivers, but you can travel Sydney-wide on any day, so there’s a lot of ground to cover,” he says.

“I’ve worked in a few areas. I wanted to work in engineering when I was growing up and I moved into fitting and turning. I worked in construction, and then I made neon signs for over 20 years. I enjoy the driving job more than any of that. I’ve been doing it for years, and I really like that you get time to yourself – but also having the interaction with customers.

Being outdoors suits me – and that’s one reason why I enjoy working at Edcon. I definitely couldn’t sit inside all day.

I had some bad experiences in previous jobs, so it’s a nice change here at Edcon. They look after you pretty well. There are good people to work with – and nothing’s a hassle. If there’s a problem, it’s sorted out quickly and easily. It’s an easy-going team and that makes it a good place to be.”
