The past year has seen the steel industry continue to navigate the challenges of recent years, but it has also been a year of significant progress. For Edcon Steel and many others in our community, it has been a year of great achievements.
As we look back, we’re excited to share some of our favourite highlights from the past 12 months in our 2024 Year in Review.
One of the most exciting things to happen this year was our epic adventure to the Red Centre of Australia. We teamed up with acclaimed Australian landscape photographer Ken Duncan and the Walk a While Foundation to support a wonderful project happening in the Northern Territory. With donations from several of our wonderful suppliers, we made the 3,000km trip to deliver steel, tools, and gear to the Ikuntji community of Haasts Bluff, about 250km west of Alice Springs.
We are so proud to have been a part of this project and to have had the support of so many of our generous suppliers.
One of the best parts of our work is supplying schools and university groups with steel and metal. We value supporting the next generation of engineers, metalworkers, and designers, and we’re proud to share these stories with our community.
We’ve worked with Michael Martin, the head teacher of Technology and Applied Studies (TAS) at Georges River Grammar, for some time. We spoke to Michael about how he and other teachers help students develop the skills they need for steel and metal work and the value of Edcon Steel’s support.
This year, we started supplying engineering steel to Gilgandra High School’s Technology and Applied Studies (TAS) department. We spoke to Russell, the head teacher of TAS, about how the exciting projects his students are working on and the value of Edcon Steel’s online ordering system.
We are proud sponsors of Bluesat UNSW, a student society for space engineering projects at the University of NSW (UNSW). We talked with Gregory, the President of Bluesat UNSW, about the group’s latest projects and their partnership with Edcon Steel.
We are always astounded by the level of skill and creativity of our customers, and the projects they have worked on in the past year have been remarkable. Here are some of our favourite community stories from the past 12 months:
Maria Romeo’ has been a valued customer at Edcon Steel Brookvale for more than a decade. She transforms our products into incredible steel structures that have been displayed at various sites, including the Australian Museum. Commissioned for Sydney’s Northern Beaches Council in 2014, Maria’s whale sculptures were part of the First Australian display.
Orange local, Bruce Beasley, is one of our original Orange customers. A regular for more than 10 years, Bruce has more than 50 years of experience as a fitter and machinist. But since his retirement, Bruce has turned his metalwork skills to building model engines.
Bruce has completed several impressive engines over the years, all to scale, including a traction engine, a class 59 locomotive, and his current project: a beam engine.
Bill Owens, at just 14 years old, showed us what can be done in just a few afternoons.
With a heap of music equipment that needed organising, Bill set about building a custom steel shelving unit to house his music equipment, cords, and accessories. The results are impressive!
We also pride ourselves on our level of customer service and the depth of our local market knowledge. Our experienced staff will provide insight and support on all of our steel, metal and industrial products.
